The Hyundai Exter, launched in South Africa in September 2024, is positioned as an affordable, feature-rich compact crossover that offers strong value for money in the competitive B-segment SUV market. I cannot but emphasise, its exceptional value, and as a fresh breeze for the South African market where most small vehicles look alike.

Key Value Propositions of the Hyundai Exter
Competitive Pricing:
The Exter is priced between R269,900 for the entry-level 1.2 Premium MT and R334,900 for the top-spec 1.2 Elite AMT. This positions it as one of the most affordable crossovers in South Africa, undercutting competitors like the Hyundai Venue (R309,900–R499,900) and aligning closely with budget-friendly rivals such as the Suzuki Ignis, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite.
For budget-conscious buyers, such as first-time car owners, young professionals, older people like myself or families seeking a second vehicle, this pricing makes the Exter accessible without compromising on essential features.
The Exter comes with a 7-year/200,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, including a 5-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and a 2-year/50,000 km drivetrain warranty, alongside a 3-year/45,000 km service plan. The service plan can also be extended at a reasonable cost.
This extensive coverage enhances ownership confidence, reduces maintenance costs, and preserves resale value, making it a financially prudent choice for cost-sensitive South African consumers.
Even the base Premium MT model (R269,900) includes a robust feature set: a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps, and six airbags.
Higher trims, such as the Executive (R289,900–R314,900) and Elite (R334,900), (as tested) add features like 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, a reverse camera, automatic air conditioning, and a sunroof, offering premium amenities at a budget price point.
Safety features, including six airbags across all models and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Hill-Start Assist on AMT variants, provide peace of mind, a critical consideration for families and new drivers.
I found the practical and its design modern. The Exter’s compact dimensions (3,815 mm long, 1,710 mm wide, 1,631 mm tall, with 185 mm ground clearance) ensure manoeuvrability in urban environments, with excellent visibility.
The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine (61 kW, 114 Nm) delivers a fuel consumption (claimed 5.7–5.9 L/100 km) but as tested 5.9L/100km.
The boot space of 290 litres (expandable to 1,275 litres) is small as can be expected but then there is ample interior room that makes it practical
The appealing boxy design, modern styling with H(yundai)-shaped LED daytime running lights, square headlamps, and optional dual-tone paint (black roof on Executive and Elite trims) gives it a distinctive, youthful appeal that favour stylish crossovers.
I loved its rugged aesthetic, roof rails and faux skid plates that aligns with an adventure-ready vehicles.
The Exter is an example of “Big Value, Small Price” and encapsulates affordability, features, and reliability.
The Exters ability to deliver premium features (e.g., touchscreen infotainment, safety suite, sunroof) at a price point comparable to budget hatchbacks like the Hyundai Grand i10 (R224,900–R309,000) is what draw buyers.
It’s appeal to diverse demographics: first-time buyers, young professionals, small families, and budget-conscious consumers seeking a crossover alternative to pricier SUVs makes it a real contender in this sector.
The Exter’s practicality and style ensures that it gives a value-driven message to the motoring public.
If displayed alongside competitors like the Suzuki Ignis or Nissan Magnite, with comparison charts the Exter will showcase its superior warranty, safety features, and standard equipment at similar price points.
Warranty: The 7-year/200,000 km warranty surpasses most competitors, offering unmatched peace of mind.
Safety: Six airbags across all models and ESC on AMT variants provide a safety edge over rivals like the Suzuki Ignis, which may lack such comprehensive features at similar price points.
Brand Reliability: Hyundai’s reputation for reliability and strong resale value in South Africa enhances the Exter’s appeal compared to newer entrants like Chinese brands.
I can praise its affordability and features as it showcases how the Exter meets the needs of economically strapped South Africans.
To be fair to all its contenders and not be biased towards only one brand I need to also discuss its potential drawbacks. I found the seats to be to firm with very little side bolstering. At high speeds the engine noise is noticeable and the lack of a turbocharged engine as an option should be addressed for those that will use the Exter for more than urban driving.
