The Volvo XC40 RECHARGE: A Comprehensive Review of Dynamics, Performance, Drivability, and Comfort

The Volvo XC40 RECHARGE (Now called the EX40) represents a significant milestone in Volvo’s electrification journey. Launched in 2020 as the brand’s first fully electric vehicle, it has undergone refinements and a renaming in 2024 to align with Volvo’s updated electric vehicle nomenclature.

This compact SUV competes in a crowded segment with rivals like the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX1, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Kia EV6. The XC40 RECHARGE stands out by blending Scandinavian design, advanced safety features, and impressive electric performance with a focus on practicality and comfort. My article explores the dynamics, performance, drivability, and comfort of the Volvo XC40 RECHARGE, drawing on recent reviews and technical specifications to provide a thorough evaluation.

Dynamics: A Balanced and Composed Ride

The XC40 RECHARGE’s dynamics are rooted in its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, shared with the Polestar 2, which was designed with electric powertrains in mind. This foundation ensures the XC40 RECHARGE avoids the compromises often seen in vehicles retrofitted for electric propulsion. The vehicle’s low center of gravity, thanks to the battery placement, enhances stability and

reduces body roll, making it feel more planted than many competitors. It gives exceptional drive quality and comfort at the same time.

The XC40 RECHARGE offers two primary powertrain options: the Single Motor (rear-wheel drive) and the Twin Motor (all-wheel drive). The Single Motor variant, with 175-182 Kw depending on the battery size (69kWh or 78kWh), provides a 0-100kph time of 7.3 seconds. The Twin Motor version, boasting 295Kw from an 82kWh battery, accelerates to 100kph in a brisk 4.8 seconds, rivaling some performance-oriented SUVs.

Handling is a strong suit, though the XC40 RECHARGE prioritizes composure over sportiness. It exhibits moderate body lean in corners compared to agile rivals like the BMW iX1 or Kia EV6, but it grips well and maintains stability through tight turns. The steering, while light and somewhat vague in feedback, is precise enough for relaxed driving, aligning with the vehicle’s family-oriented ethos.

The XC40 RECHARGE’s suspension, tuned for comfort, absorbs road imperfections effectively, though the ride can feel slightly choppy on rough surfaces due to the battery’s added weight. Opting for smaller 19-inch wheels over the 20-inch alloys improves ride quality, particularly on uneven roads.

Performance: Power and Efficiency in Harmony

The XC40 RECHARGE’s performance is a highlight, particularly in the Twin Motor configuration. With 295Kw and instant torque, it delivers exhilarating acceleration, making it surprisingly quick for a family SUV. The Single Motor versions, with 175- 182 Kw, are less aggressive but still offer ample power for daily driving, with smooth and linear power delivery. The transition from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive in the Single Motor model (introduced in 2023) improves traction and handling, especially

in dry conditions.

Range and efficiency are critical for electric vehicles, and the XC40 RECHARGE performs admirably. The Single Motor Extended Range model achieves up to 342 miles (WLTP), while the Twin Motor offers around 335 miles. Real-world estimates, such as those from EPA ratings, suggest 485km for the Single Motor and slightly less for the Twin Motor, depending on driving conditions. These figures are competitive, though they trail the Tesla Model Y’s range. Charging capabilities are robust, with a peak DC fast-charging rate of 200 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 30-40 minutes. An 11 kW onboard charger supports home charging, with a full charge taking about 8 hours on a 7kW wall box.

Efficiency is respectable, with the Single Motor model averaging 20-21 kWh/100 km, aligning with Volvo’s claims. Regenerative braking, adjustable via driving modes, enhances efficiency and allows for one-pedal driving, which is smooth and intuitive. Once used to this you barely touch the brakes. However, the dynamic cruise control can be overly sensitive, accelerating aggressively in certain scenarios, which may detract from the otherwise refined experience.

Drivability: Intuitive and User-Friendly

The XC40 RECHARGE is designed to be easy to drive, a hallmark of Volvo’s philosophy. Its compact dimensions make it manoeuvrable in urban environments, while the elevated ride height provides good visibility. The switch to rear-wheel drive in the Single Motor variant has improved drivability, offering better traction and a more balanced feel compared to the earlier front-wheel-drive model. The Twin

Motor’s all-wheel-drive system adds confidence in adverse conditions, though most owners may find the Single Motor sufficient for everyday needs.

The XC40 RECHARGE’s Google-based Android Automotive infotainment system is a standout, offering intuitive navigation, voice controls, and seamless smartphone integration. However, small onscreen buttons can be challenging to use while driving, a minor drawback in an otherwise user-friendly interface. The absence of a traditional start button simplifies operation—just enter with the key, shift to drive, and go. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control,

lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring, enhance drivability, though some systems, like lane assist, are less intrusive than competitors, earning praise for reducing driver distraction.

Comfort: A Sanctuary on Wheels

Comfort is where the XC40 RECHARGE truly excels, embodying Volvo’s reputation for creating serene cabins. The interior is minimalist yet luxurious, with high-quality materials like Nappa leather, suede, and textile upholstery options. The front seats are among the best in the class, offering excellent support, extensive adjustability, and optional heating and massage functions. Rear seating accommodates adults

comfortably, though the middle seat’s floor hump can be intrusive for three passengers. Headroom and legroom are ample, rivaling the BMW X1.

The XC40 RECHARGE’s cabin is designed for practicality, with thoughtful storage solutions, including a 31-litre front trunk (frunk) for charging cables and a 419-460-litre rear boot, expandable to 1,295-1,328 litres with the rear seats folded. The flat loading floor and false boot floor add versatility, making it ideal for family use.

Ride comfort is a standout feature, with the suspension absorbing most road imperfections, though larger 20-inch wheels can transmit some harshness. The XC40 RECHARGE is quieter than many rivals, with minimal wind and road noise, though motorway speeds may introduce slight wind buffeting. The Harman Kardon sound system, standard on higher trims, delivers exceptional audio quality,

enhancing the cabin’s calming ambiance.

Safety is a cornerstone of the XC40 RECHARGE’s appeal, earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Features like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert provide peace of mind, with real-world tests highlighting their effectiveness in preventing collisions.

Conclusion: A Well-Rounded Electric SUV

The Volvo XC40 RECHARGE impressed me as it combines impressive dynamics, strong performance, intuitive drivability, and exceptional comfort, making it a compelling choice in the compact electric SUV segment. Its balanced handling and powerful Twin Motor option cater to those seeking performance, while the Single Motor variant offers efficiency and range for daily commuting. The user-friendly

interface and advanced safety features enhance drivability, and the luxurious, practical cabin ensures comfort for all occupants. While it may not match the sportiness of a BMW iX1, the XC40 RECHARGE’s blend of Scandinavian style, safety, and refinement makes it a standout for families and luxury buyers. For those prioritizing a premium electric SUV that feels like a “regular car” with zero-emission benefits, the XC40 RECHARGE is a top contender.
